Automated Red Light Camera Enforcement Program

About the program

Verra Mobility, Inc manages the automated Red Light Camera program citations and its equipment on behalf of the City of Laurel.

The City is one of many jurisdictions in the Washington Metropolitan area to use automated red light camera enforcement to reduce traffic crashes, pedestrian accidents and save lives. The program provides automated enforcement in residential commercial areas.  Red Light cameras provide police with one more tool to protect pedestrians and other motorists by targeting drivers who fail to stop when the light turns red or fail to stop prior to making a right turn on a red light, as the law requires.

The fine for failing to stop on the red light is $75.00 for each violation.  Violators activate the camera resulting in the issuance of a citation that is mailed through the US Postal Service.  All violators have the option to pay the fine or contest the violation by requesting a court hearing within the 30-day time limit indicated on the citation.

Please note what the Maryland State traffic light law states concerning a right-on-red turn:

The Maryland State Traffic Light Law states that if there are no signs prohibiting it, you may make a right turn on red AFTER a full and complete stop—not a hesitation or a slow roll—before the white traffic control or intersection line (not the cross walk lines), after which you may proceed with caution.

Just as you would stop first for a “stop sign” or a “flashing red light,” all the more for a solid, steady glowing red light which must be obeyed first, at all times since you do not have the right-of-way at that point.  [This law is in effect in all 50 states (exception: NO right turns permitted on red in New York City, and as of 01/01/19, Washington, DC.  This infraction comes with a $350.00 and $300.00 fine respectively in these cities).]

Photo violations do not result in points and cannot be used to increase a person’s insurance rates. Be sure to go online to view the video of your infraction (photos do not show motion/action). The video is what’s used as evidence in court.
