Released on April 20, 2021 - 3:25pm

Hope springs eternal and this Spring, the City of Laurel is thrilled to announce that we are celebrating our selection as a Tree City USA for the 28th straight year!

To celebrate, the City of Laurel Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony will be held virtually this year on Friday, April 30, 2021, at 10:00am in the City’s Memorial Garden. Watch it Live on the City’s Facebook page, City of Laurel – Government.

A “Redbud Rising Sun” tree will be planted this year in memory of those lost to the COVID-19 Global pandemic. The “Redbud Rising Sun” is a deciduous tree, with apricot, yellow and green heart-shaped leaves and grows 12-15 feet tall.

To achieve the Tree City designation every year, the following four criteria must be met:

  • Have a Tree Board or Department
  • Have a tree care ordinance
  • Create an annual community forestry budget and
  • Hold an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Mayor Moe is honored that Laurel is one of more than 3,600 Tree City USA communities to receive this designation. If ever there was a time for trees, now is that time. Communities worldwide are facing issues with air quality, water resources, personal health and energy use and Laurel continues to do its part.
