ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE


Tuesday May 24, 2022. LAKE HOUSE


 


 


  1. Call to Order

    The meeting was called to order by Chairman James Kole at 6:22 PM


  1. Roll Call

Members present: James Kole, Janice Blitz, Kyla Clark (by zoom and phone). Staff present: Bill Bailey, Michele Blair, Laura Christoplos. Public present: Jimmy Rogers , Brian Coyle.


  1. Approval of Minutes from April 28, 2022, meeting

On a motion by Ms. Blitz, seconded by Ms. Clark, the minutes from the April 28, 2022, meeting were unanimously approved.


  1. Report and discussion of progress in finding new members

This item was tabled for later discussion.


  1. Election of Committee Vice Chair.

Janice Blitz and Kyla Clark were nominated. Election was moved to the June agenda.


  1. Election/Appointment of subcommittee Chairs

Chairman Kole asked that the Bee City Certification Chair be appointed after the Bee City Resolution was sent to the EAC for comment.


On a motion by Chairman Kole, seconded by Ms. Clark, Ms. Clark was appointed chair of the Webpage Redesign subcommittee.


Election/ Appointment of Pet Waste subcommittee was tabled for later. Mr. Bailey suggested that pet waste messages might go on the BigBelly message boards


  1. Report from Environmental Programs Manager

Ms. Blair has a framework for the Bee City certification which will be going before the Council on June 1.They have identified areas for pollinator gardens at Gude Mansion, and on Sweitzer Lane where Laurel for the Patuxent has already started one. The EAC is the named committee supporting the Bee City certification.


Ms. Blair would also like the EAC to support the Tip it or Toss it program for mosquito mitigation.


  1. New Business
    1. No Mow May presentation by Jimmy Rogers

Mr. Rogers is interested in getting the ball rolling on pursuing No Mow May in Laurel for next year. He recommends we model our programs on Howard County’s Bee city project. Mr. Bailey mentioned that the Mayor has discussed No Mow May. College Park promoted No Mow May by distributing signage, doing a proclamation, and on social media.


Ms. Blair suggested taking advantage of the Quill lot (the farmers market site)to do educational programs, show samples of native plants, and perhaps have a native plant sale.
