History

The City of Laurel Public Safety Citizens Advisory Committee was created and established by Resolution No. 15-03, passed by the Mayor and City Council on September 22, 2003. On November 13, 2017, the Mayor and City Council approved Resolution No. 15-17 that changed the name of the Committee to the Public Safety and Transportation Committee and its membership. The Committee is made up of eleven (11) members, one (1) Council Member who serves as Chair; the Chief of the Laurel Police Department, the Chief of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, the Chief of the Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad, Director of Public Works and six (6) citizen members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council for two year terms. 

Authority

The Committee is charged with making recommendations and giving other needed advisory services to the Mayor and City Council, Director of Public Works and the Chief of Police on matters related to transportation, public safety and citizens with disabilities.  The Committee reviews and makes recommendations regarding positions to be taken by the City on Federal, State or County legislations pertinent to transportation, public safety and citizens with disabilities.  The Committee also reviews and makes recommendations regarding legislation originating with the Mayor and City Council that is pertinent to transportation/road improvements/enhancements that the Committee believes should be proposed in regard to transportation, public safety and citizens with disabilities.

The Committee meets monthly at the Laurel Municipal Center at 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD.  Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and citizens are encouraged to attend.
